The Well

"The Well" (We Are Coming Out of It!)

Wood engraving, created directly from Escher’s woodblock which he created in 1946. Escher was a member of the "Nederlandsche Ex Libris Kring," (a printmaker’s and print collector’s society in The Netherlands) for many years. This engraving was created to honor the Dutch Underground, who had fought so valiantly in WWII, a conflict that had finally ended the year before.

This rare graphic is reproduced in the catalog raisonné of Escher’s work:M. C. Escher: His Life and Complete Graphic Work (Abrams, N.Y.; 1982) Page 291, Catalog Number 345
