Fish and Waves
(B.442) 1963 Woodcut
This was to be Escher's final small-format print, and it is certainly one of his most dramatic. The fish and waves combine in surprisingly complex ways, and the artist captures the quintessential harmony of his contrasting subject. Douglas Hofstadeter, author of 'Godel, Escher, Bach,' wrote of this print, "this miniature represents what creative genius at its absolute peak is capable of."
